Nothing says "Happy Birthday" like an apoplectic fit...

This morning I was awakened by the ear-puncturing sweet jingle of my cell phone. When I saw that it was Mom calling at such an early hour, I answered it right away.

Now if that had been someone other than Mom, I'd have been worried. But seeing as it was Mom on the line, her screaming into the phone was to be expected.

Keep in mind all of this is in Mandarin:
Me: Yes?

Mom: What are you going to do for your birthday? It's on Thanksgiving this year, you know. I called you a few days ago and you never called me back. Are you OK?

Me: What do you mean I never called you back? I called and left a message two days ago on the answering machine at home. You didn't get it?

Mom: Oh, I forgot to tell you. I think the answering machine is broken. All it does is a little beep-beep noise. I don't know what's wrong with it.

Me: How can you say I didn't call just because you didn't get the message? I told you I was planning to go home for Thanksgiving and that you didn't have to go to any trouble for anything since it's just us [me, Mom, and Bro]. I didn't know your machine wasn't working right.

Mom: Well, you should've known I wouldn't get the message if you left it on the broken machine.

Me: [silence]

Mom: So what time are you coming home?

I'm seriously re-thinking this crackpot idea of going home for Thanksgiving.

Happy Birthday to Me (and also a one-year-belated thank you for my gifts from last year)
Excerpt: I've decided that since it's my birthday, I'm allowed to be as emotional as I care to be. It's not even noon and so far I've been happy, sad, nostalgic, giddy, pouty, bratty, annoyed, irritated, a little mopey, and hungry...

Thanksgiving Tonkatsu & then some (aka: A giant post about food)
Excerpt: Among the many things I am grateful for, I am always especially grateful for my family & loved ones. Although my Mom can be "a character" at times, I know that everything she does is out of love for me...

at least i'll be getting some good wines this time--a gruner veltliner which has a cute picture of a deer sticking its tongue out...and the wine's tasty too!

I know I gave up on that idea, many, many years ago. It did wonders for my sanity.

we are totally abstaining from going to see anyone on thansgiving...or x-mas for that matter. they want to see us, they can come here. we have two young children to travel with (3 and 5) this entails practically moving just to get to where we are going, and then spending all of our time keeping them out of people's knick-knacks, doo-dads, and kitsch when we are visiting. a good friend of mine has been grilling me as to when we are coming back for a visit sine the last time we did was the fourth of july. hmmmm...let me think...on the fourth, we went to a gathering at her house, and she casully came up to me shortly after we got there and said 'you might want to go get your son, he just went upstairs and we keep a loaded shotgun under the bed.' wha-wha-what??? yeah. just casually told me rather than getting him herself. i didn't even know he had darted up there as i was busy trying to contain his older brother to keep him from going into the 'gun room'. ARGH! i guess i mistakenly thought when they invited us over that they would at least try to have some kind of child-proofing done. and she wouldn't let me close the door to the upstairs, citing that the cats needed to come & go as they pleased...because you know her cats are more important than my kids getting shot.

anyhow...yeah...that sums up any trips i take there. sorry for the book.

Does she just ignore the illogic? Does she not see it, or does she see it then choose to just ignore it?
