stkyrice & aiyahh are getting married!

Our friends stkyrice & aiyahh are in line at City Hall in SF right now to get married!

The Happy Couple! I took this picture of them on New Years Eve! aiyahh is on the left and stkyrice is on the right!
Marriage is love.

stkyrice is IMing me with his Sidekick while in the 2-3 hour wait. I want pictures! I wish I was up there to be the photographer!

They've been in line since 10am. They say that it's "controlled chaos" there and that everyone is very excited! I'm sitting here at my desk and I'm excited for them!

I am trying to convince them to lead everyone waiting in a "We are getting married" cheer.

*clap! clap!*
sis boom bah...
rah rah rah!

I wasn't a cheerleader in high school, so that's as far as I got to making up a cheer for them. Anyone want to help me with it?

UPDATE @ 11:22am: They just got interviewed by the Japanese TV! (We assume it is NHK!)

UPDATE @ 11:45am: They are close to the front of the line! Maybe 15-20 minutes away!

UPDATE @ 12:02pm: Ok, maybe they are actually 30 minutes away. Ai-yahh is eating fries. I said it was the perfect wedding day meal! Ai-yahh had wanted to go to Hooters for lunch, but then stkyrice gave him "the look o death," so instead he got fries from McD's, which is only a block away.

UPDATE @ 12:18pm: Yay! I am now officially The Maid of Honor in an Undisclosed Location™ (thanks, skurdycat!) Maybe I'll be convinced to share photos of me in the hideous dress. Maybe.

UPDATE @ 12:23pm: They are moving closer! They can see the stairs!

UPDATE @ 12:28pm: I'm so excited!!! I am doing the Dance of Joy in front of the keyboard. Really, I am!

UPDATE @ 12:42pm: The wedding has been linked by Raven's Hot Links!

UPDATE @ 12:55pm: Ok, it's taking longer than anticipated, but they are on Van Ness and report lots of honking, lots of str8 support. And there are no protesters. Apparently the lines have stretched for another block. They are really really close to the stairs now.

UPDATE @ 1:07pm: They are approx 20 feet from the stairs. They can see more cameras...reporters!

UPDATE @ 1:15pm: They just got verified! They are walking up the stairs! Almost there...

UPDATE @ 1:20pm: They just took pictures! They are at the entrance!!! They just got a t-shirt from a random woman. It says "Validated gay on valentines day"

UPDATE @ 1:29pm: Going through security! They got a number to get the ceremony done!

UPDATE @ 1:47pm: Their last IM came in at 1:37pm. I can barely breathe! It must be happening!

UPDATE @ 2:00pm: I just got another IM. The license is being typed up! Ceremony is coming soon!

UPDATE @ 2:34pm: They're done! Officially married! JUST MARRIED! Outside of City Hall!

UPDATE @ 3:52pm: They are waiting in line again. This time they are waiting to park. At Fisherman's Wharf. At Hooters.

Click to see how big their smiles really are!

stkyrice himself! AND Aiyahhhhh!

From Joz & Yoshi!

Thanks for the linkage: Solonor, GlimpseofaGrrl, Raven's Hot Links, Ginadapooh, Zuly, dirtyfez, retarded.azn-bish, halfgeek, clayrhino, Mac, Hunter, Ann!

Other folks just married!
Matt & Brian! Kurt & Tony, Guy & Trey (almost there!), MJ & the Missus!!!

Marvelous! What great news to end my day. I'm very happy for your friends and for you that you could "participate!"

Posted by: Lesblogger at February 14, 2004 07:57 PM

Congratulations! I'm always happy for two people who find true love together. As long as I'm not attracted to either one of them, that is. If I was, then it'd be a problem.
I tell you, by June, every wedding's going to have a photographer, a videographer and a blogger...
And getting married on Valentine's Day is such a great way to save on future gifting!
(Sorry. Deep-Seeded Valentine cynicism is coming out... must beat it back with a stick)

Yo, congrats. All day long on Friday there was video feeding down (to my tv station) of happy couples tying the knot in SF. It was fantastic to watch. I've never seen that much happiness in one room before. It was wonderful. :)

Posted by: munin at February 15, 2004 11:37 AM

Thanks so much for the love and support everyone.

I'm shocked. Honestly, I'm really shocked. I've always been a bit cynical about the whole gay marriage thing, especially since technically the marriage doesn't count anywhere else outside of SF (which is funny because my partner and I can literally spit into SF from our house). We've always joked with each other that we'll go to Toronto, Vancouver, or Boston. The mayor of SF is also a bit of a publicity hog so when the announcement came that queers were going to get married, most of us thought, "yeah, whatever."

Then Del Lyon and Phyllis Martin got married.

You could hear the collective shock from all over SF. We still weren't pretty serious about it. Even Howard, who's always been more excited about marriage than I was, wasn't too excited about getting married either.

But we figured, hell, Valentine's day, convenient, and we're a part of history. We arrive there in casual gear, both in jeans and t-shirts, and wait in line.

And wait. And wait.

What strikes me the most is the whole mundaneness of all the couples there. And the cameras. Snapping pictures of ordinary, boring queer couples like us. The couple in front of us, two men from LA who are visiting SF for the International Bear Weekend. Behind us, two women from SF with their 2 year-old son in tow. Journalists are everywhere, swarming down on people.

The most interesting thing is realizing that we are the ONLY asian-asian male couple in line. The Japanese news cameras spot us, and literally run to us, and interview us for a good 5 minutes. This is an hour into waiting.

Howard runs to McDs, gets fries. Random people congratulate us, give us Hershey's kisses, roses, refreshments. We fill out the forms, and notice how everything's been "gender-neutralized."

And we wait. 4 hours finally pass until we get to the foot of City Hall.

All the copules take pictures at the stairs. We take two, and suddenly a pretty blond woman runs up to us and says, "take these shirts! i made them for guys like you. congratulations!" she disappears into the crowd as quickly as she came in. the shirts, "Validated Gay on Valentine's Day." Size: Small. I will NEVER fit into this. :)

We go through security, fill out the forms. Pay our fees, swear that we've told the truth, rush down the stairs and walk to the rotunda, where the weddings are performed. We were under the impression that we would be doing weddings en masse, a la the Moonies, but no, we see a guy in a suit come up to us and says that we're next.

So we get to a spot on the rotunda, and the guy starts talking from the script. He says, "Do you take..."

As he says it, it suddenly hits me. Wow, I'm getting married. The cynic who's always referred to marriage as something nothing more than pomp and circumstance. I'm suddenly overcome with emotion. I'm declaring in front of total strangers that we're getting married, saying the actual vows of marriage. I have to fight back tears as I look into Howard's eyes, who is also fighting back tears. "I do," I say.

Suddenly it's over. We're married. We keep repeating it to each other. "OMG, we're married."

We go to a fundraiser later on that night, and we're announced as one of the new newlyweds (the picture in the blog).

There is an air of excitement and shock when we announce that we're married--even at Hooters! The Hooters girls were excited when we told them what happened...We go to a club later on, and everyone is amazed, but not shocked, that we're married.

Yesterday was just...amazing. Even if (which I expect) these weddings are declared null and void or suspended, the actual fact that we went through this was a chance in a lifetime.

Thanks, again, for sharing in our joy. :)

Posted by: stkyrice at February 15, 2004 11:54 AM

congrats, you two! you guys rock!

Congratulations Stkyrice & Aiyahh! :-)

Congrats Howard & Efren! Had I checked my email this weekend, I would have known you two were getting married. Sh*t, had I known, my partner and I would have joined the line. We're planning a trip to visit my uncle in Boston in May once marriage equality becomes the law of Massachusetts.

I'm just like jozjoz: I'M SO FREAKING EXCITED!!!

The best to you both.
