The highlight of last, last Thursday night...

...WAS NOT meeting Minnie & Maggie.

It was date night with Yoshi. On January 29th, we went to see a screening of Against the Ropes which will be released by Paramount on February 20th.

The movie is loosely based on the real story of female boxing promoter Jackie Kallen and how she became one of the first females to succeed in the male-dominated world of professional boxing. In real life, as a manager, she guided four boxers to world titles; was at one time the commissioner of the International Female Boxers Association and has won numerous awards and honors.

The movie stars Meg Ryan as Jackie Kallen, Omar Epps as Luther Shaw, Charles S. Dutton, and (my favorite) Tony Shalhoub(!).

I haven't reviewed movies in quite a while so rather than encourage or discourage anyone from seeing the movie, I'll just say this: I thought the movie tried to be a cross between Rocky, Karate Kid, and Erin Brockovich. I won't say where it succeeded or failed in these efforts. And I'll also say that in reading about Jackie Kallen's real life after the movie, I'm now disappointed that so much of the movie fictionalized her story.

You can see on her website that her real life is extremely interesting... I especially enjoyed reading about how she met her beau Gary Baldassarre in this article from the Detroit News.

And I can see why Jackie's 10 Rounds to Success worked for her.

i thought it seemed erin brockovich-esque when i first saw the commercial. the problem is meg's major co-stars...er...lips. i thought by now they would surely be deflated. i can't stand looking at her. she looks almost looks like jack nicholson as the joker from batman.
