Random History Lesson: Pancho Barnes

I was browsing through Los Angeles Magazine and on page 19 of the February 2004 issue, under BUZZCUTS, I saw this:

From the desert to the sea, indeed: The HAPPY BOTTOM RIDING CLUB, a famed watering hole near Edwards Air Force Base that was run by woman avaiator PANCHO BARNES and served pilots and movie stars from the 1930s to the '50s, is being faithfully re-created near the QUEEN MARY in Long Beach.

Have you heard of Pancho Barnes or the Happy Bottom Riding Club? I hadn't... until about a year ago. A friend of mine works closely with the folks who run Pancho Barnes Enterprises, Inc. and I learned a great deal from the panchobarnes.com website.

Go visit the site for a great history lesson on an incredible character. I especially loved reading about the boobie prize!

I can't wait for the place in Long Beach to open up.

I had first heard of Pancho Barnes and the Happy Bottom Riding Club from the film "The Right Stuff". Then my dad told me a lot more, being as he was into aviation from the 1930's on. (Dad worked for Hughes Tool Company - owned by Howard Hughes himself) I didn't know they were going to re-create it near the Queen Mary. I'll have to tell him.
