Home again

300+ miles and only one bathroom break since we left San Jose, and we're home again.

Home... as in our cold little house in Los Angeles.

We walked through the door here at about 1:15am. Yoshi drove the first hour (until we got through the Pacheco Pass) and then I drove the rest of the way so that Yosh could get some sleep. Too bad Yoshi couldn't actually sleep with me at the wheel and all. I was driving approx 80-90 mph the whole way down and didn't really slow down while on the Grapevine, either. Every time Yosh was just about to fall asleep, some dumbass would cut me off, slow down, or just plain drive stupidly around me... forcing me to drive equally dumbassedly. By the time we got to the Grapevine, Yoshi was wide-awake, making observations about our surroundings, subtly trying to get me to slow down.

Yoshi: You know there is snow on the mountains on both sides of us.

Me: Uh huh. I'm not looking at the mountains. I'm looking at the road.

Yoshi: That must mean it's really cold outside. You might want to be careful of ice.

Me: Ice? I don't see any ice.

Yoshi: There's such a thing called black ice. You can't see it and it's very dangerous.

Me: Black ice? That's real? I've only heard of it, but I always thought it was kind of a myth... like the Loch Ness Monster.

*silence, except for the sound of Yoshi's eyes rolling at my dumbass statement*

Yoshi: You really don't want to be driving 95 mph when you could be driving in ice.

Me: I'm really not driving that fast. It only seems faster because we're going downhill.

*Yoshi tries not to reach over and strangle me while pointing at the speedometer*

We managed to make it home before Yoshi maimed me for being a speed demon in the HunnyMobile. When I get up in the morning, I'll give a run-down of our day in SF. Yes, we did make it there.

Monday Gratitude...
Excerpt: I am grateful that the Professor is back (even though he thinks that Yoshi's version of the drive home is probably more accurate than my version). For the record, Yoshi and I really *did* have a 'black ice' conversation and...

No, Yoshi wouldn't let me drive.
Excerpt: We (Yoshi) drove up to San Jose last night, getting in around 1:30. I can't imagine why Yoshi wouldn't let me drive. Something about it raining and maybe snowing on the grapevine. Or something....

"It only seems faster because we're going downhill." I LOVE that!

heheheh, black ice DOES exist:) I put my jeep in a ditch because of it once. I can't sleep when my hubby drives either. Funny thing is that I drive just like he does:)

A co-worker was a victim of black ice in Columbia, SC in the mid-1980's (he survived!) I didn't think it happened anywhere except for Colorado and other western mountainous areas. And I've had the dis-pleasure of it in Charlotte, as well.

Slow down, silly. Glad to hear you arrived home safe (despite the black ice and high speed.)

I flipped my Saturn in black ice - almost 4 years ago... gotta be care of the stuff.

Although the REAL threat *sounds* like it was coming from the passenger seat... ;-)

Maybe we should have a post from Yoshi - to set the story straight... :)

"Black ice" is no myth, and while it can be found on all sorts of roads, it particularly loves bridges (I'll spare you the science lesson). It doesn't matter what part of the country you're in.

If I were you I'd be thanking Hunny. :P

Hey, isn't the reason the car floor is there is to stop your foot from going any farther down? Just be careful of the black ice, but keep that right foot ON THE FLOOR!

I just kept picturing Clark driving 80 MPH in National Lampoons Vacation and him telling his wife..."it sure doesn't feel like it honey".

hmmm you know, I hate to admit it Joz, but Yoshi does have a point....although I understand your whole thing...driving fast is fun. I have made it so I can get from my place to my parents in 30 minutes! (sometimes even faster)....although it should take me an hour and fifteen...*hee*
