Why I don't do the gift-shopping...

yoshi! (2:06:50 PM): what do we get R & L [for their upcoming commitment ceremony]?
me (2:09:41 PM): um
me (2:09:48 PM): i dunno
me (2:09:53 PM): a puppy?
yoshi! (2:10:05 PM): you are SO no help

Evidently, a puppy is an "inappropriate wedding gift."

I'd LOVE a puppy as a wedding gift... but then, I already have two, and I'm already married.

The most inappropriate wedding gift I was given (well, offered - I refused to take it) was a baggie of pot and a pipe. I'll take the puppy any day.

It's a committment ceremony, right? Get them the 'joke' present: a pair of straitjackets. Committment, geddit? :)

How is a puppy an "inappropriate wedding gift"? I could understand if it was a drooling, rabid puppy that messed up the wedding cake and bit the best man in the ass. But a cute, harmless puppy?

OK, here's my 2 pfennigs on this subject.

#1 I think that if the couple is young and starting out, a gift registry is the way to go.
#2 Any living thing as a gift, unless you REALLY know the couple is ready to share the love with it would be cruel, to the living thing and the couple.
#3 If it is a blending of well established homes,
a personal gesture (helping them move, helping with the ritual or whatever) is really nice.
#4 If they are lesbian and getting married after the first date, cancel the U-haul and give them 10 sessions with a therapist.
#5 If it is me...HELLLLLLPPPPP!
