RIP: My Old Voicemail #310-288-6516

I’ve had the phone # above for well over 15 years. Cellular phones were crazy expensive back then; they were unaffordable for a college student like me– only business executives and hookers had them at that time. I got the 310-288-6516 number as a “voicemail only” account when I was a freshman in college and I had to share my landline with two roommates who pretty much hated me because every time the phone rang, it was for me. I started giving out my voicemail # so that I could check messages at my leisure and so my roommates didn’t have to bother taking messages for me. I paid $1.99/month for this service– waaay cheaper than having a cell phone. I kept this number even after I moved out of that apartment and went back home to Orange County for the summer so people could leave messages for me without having to call my parents’ home.

A few years later, during the Pleistocene Era, I had something that was called a pager. It was also known as a beeper. That’s because when someone called your number, your pager would “beep.” Awesome, right?! Although doctors had been using this advanced technology for years, this pager stuff was very high-tech for the consumer market in the mid-late 1990s. THAT WAS A WHOLE OTHER CENTURY AGO, PEOPLE! When I was a junior, I spent over $100 on a cranberry colored pager. I had it for about 2 months when I lost it at a pay phone(!) at UCLA when I was calling someone back who had paged me. I went through a number of pagers and finally decided that I didn’t need a pager, so I went back to voicemail only service.

Around my senior year of college, cell phones began to become affordable to consumers and I went to a Pacific Bell Wireless store to get my first mobile phone. This was back in the days before number porting, so I had to get a new cell phone number– I decided to retain my voicemail service on the side, even though I had voicemail service on my cell phone. And oh yes, you could send “pages” on the cell phone, too! I could have gotten rid of the voicemail # at this time, but I’d already had that # for a few years and I had gotten attached to it. The price had gone up a couple of bucks a month, but it was still very affordable. I kept both numbers.

Fast forward a decade and I have had gone through a whole host of cell phones and seen the Internet and technologies advance at a mind-numbingly fast pace, but I kept holding on to that voicemail # even though I didn’t really need it. But this year, I decided to cut the cord because of Google Voice. Even though the monthly fee for my voicemail # was only $7.99/month, I decided that I couldn’t justify paying *anything* for a number that I rarely used, especially because Google Voice is free and has many, many more features!

So sadly, my 310-288-6516 # is no more. If anyone from the last 15 years of my life is Googling that number looking for me, I thought I’d put this little PSA out there that I am pretty easy to reach online (see my contact page for the preferred methods!). And if you’d rather call me instead of finding me online– what do you think this is? The Jurassic Period? Come join this millennium, whydoncha?!

East West Players Honored With The Heritage Award

East West Players (EWP), the nation’s premier Asian
American theatre, was awarded the Heritage Award at the 9th Annual
Autumn Festival on Saturday, November 6, 2010 held at the Aquarium of
the Pacific in Long Beach, CA.

The 9th Annual Autumn Festival celebrates the cultures
of China, Japan, Korea, and the Philippines. At each of the Aquarium’s
cultural festivals, an outstanding leader in the community is honored
with the Heritage Award. Cecile Fisher, Vice President of Marketing
for the Aquarium of the Pacific, was there to host the awards
ceremony.  Jan Perry, Los Angeles City Councilwoman of the Ninth
District, presented the award to Tim Dang, Producing Artistic Director
of East West Players, after she performed a Japanese dance to open the
ceremony.

“We are honored to have been presented with the Heritage
Award for the work we’ve done in our community,” says Tim Dang. “East
West Players is about telling stories, especially from the Asian
Pacific American community. We always try to bring entertainment,
education, and enlightenment in our main stage productions and
educational programs so our neighborhoods can feel that much more in
touch with each other.”

The weekend was a flurry of activities and featured live
music and dance performances, cultural arts exhibits, and children’s
crafts.  Throughout the weekend artisans and other vendors displayed
and sold their works. Various ethnic entrees were also presented.

Local Eats
Tsukemen: A Rare Ramen Treat At Mitsuwa in Costa Mesa, But Only Until Sunday
by Michelle Woo

Mitsuwa Marketplace in Costa Mesa is hosting a food fair right now
(they stretch the word "fair" to mean they’re offering a couple
special, limited-time-only dishes) and this time, pop-up shop Nidaime
Tsujita is serving up tsukemen, or "dipping noodles."

With this style of ramen, popular in Japan but a rarity in the States,
the noodles and the broth are served in separate bowls. One benefit of
this: The noodles won’t get soggy during your meal. Using your
chopsticks, you’re to dip the noodles into the broth (which is
actually more like a gravy) before taking a bite.

The result: mouthgasm. The spaghetti-like noodles are perfectly
al-dente and the broth, made with pork and chicken bones, seafood and
vegetables, is rich, slightly creamy and enhanced with a tangy kick
thanks to the slices of lime. It’s delicious, yet intense–you’ll have
no urge to gulp down the rest of the soup once the noodles are gone.
The chashu is tender, oily and fatty, the way chashu should be.

The guys at the counter are masters at upselling you on the soft,
oozing hanjuku egg to accompany the dish. Don’t hesitate. Just go for
it.

Lines can be long, so head over there before or after the lunch rush.
And hurry, the fair ends on Sunday, Nov. 7.

Google Voice sucks at transcribing voicemails from my Mom #4

I love Google Voice but it sucks at speech-to-text translation from my Mom. Of course this is not GV’s fault because most of the time, my Mom is speaking Chinese or maybe Chinglish at best. I really don’t expect it to translate twice! Here’s one example:

8/29/10 6:18 PM
Alright. Hello. Bye, hey hello, hello hey Yeah, Yeah, hello hello.

Note: I don’t know what my Mom was doing when she called me, but at first it sounded like she was talking to someone else. But then she did say “Hello, Jocelyn. Hello?” Google Voice has not gotten my name right yet.
What GV got right: Hello; hello (in italics)
What GV got wrong: Everything else.

Thanks to the ever-lovely Michelle Woo for meeting up and trying the tsukemen (dipping noodles).

They were delicious but the broth is not for the faint of heart! It is incredibly rich but excellent flavor! Go for the seasoned hanjuku egg! We were lucky that we took our lunch break a little later than the lunch rush and didn’t have to wait in a long queue.

If you want to try them, you’ll have to hurry– they’ll be leaving this space on Sunday, 11/7/2010!
