Racist Camera! No, I did not blink… I’m just Asian!, originally uploaded by !!! :: jozjozjoz :: !!!.
We got our Mom a new Nikon S630 digital camera for Mother’s Day and I
was playing with it during the Angels game we were at on Sunday.
As I was taking pictures of my family, it kept asking "Did someone
blink?" even though our eyes were always open.
Sheesh! RACIST! :P

Asian?? I always thought you were just sleepy… ;p
You would think that Nikon, being a Japanese company, would have designed this with Asian eyes in mind? You’d think. :)
Racist Japanese camera!
I’ll bet the whole world looks like a horizon to you.
You’d think that Nikon, being a Japanese company, would have designed it with Asian eyes in mind. You’d think. :P
haha. I always had a bad feeling about cameras being racist. You have confirmed my suspicion.
Isn’t Nikon a Japanese company? You’d think they’d recognize Asians better!
Haha, I know right, Mikey?!
I am pretty sure that this feature is only turned on for cameras being sold in the US. I can’t imagine them trying this with cameras sold in Japan/other parts of Asia!
oh come on, we all know that the most racist people are the japanese! :P
JOZ!!! How’s things? Lol, had to come drop you a comment, was reading Reddit and I was like, WOW, It’s Joz!! Glad to see you, hope you are doing well!!! Take care!!!

Haha loved it, thanks for sharing.
Interesting, and terrible. You should write a protest petition at petitiononline.com and give us the link to sign it.
LOL!! Thats why they started making widescreens in Asia. Trying to push their POV.
Alex, you should give us your address so we can beat you up for being such a dumbass.
Alex, are you serious? Start a petition against this camera because it thinks that person blinked? Grow a pair.
We all know Japanese are whitewashed. They have chinky eyes too, but who cares right?
Brink! Brink!
Hilarious :) I break into a smile when I think of this article. Thanks for being a sport and posting your pic.
Bamboo Forest:
“haha. I always had a bad feeling about cameras being racist. You have confirmed my suspicion.”
I also suspect cameras are ageist. They deliberately highlight every tiny little wrinkle.
That’s awful lol your post was a bit funny though the Nikon Coolpix S630 is the only camera I have heard of doing that so far ;)
I love your eyes. Period.
Hi Joz. Visiting you after reading an article on Yahoo about your camera. Well, it’s a good thing I did cos I am looking for a new camera to buy. Hmmm…guess some smart technology ends up not being so great after all. And being that this particular brand was developed and tested by Japan, how can this happen *_^
Hey Joz
Congrats on the Time and Yahoo stories!
Margaret Cho also picked up the story and wrote about it on her blog:
http://www.margaretcho.com/content/2010/01/22/racist-camera/comment-page-1/#comment-48269, however she did not cite your blog – only a link to the time page.
I posted a reply with your website telling folks to see the original post to go to your May 2009 archive. Expect a lot of hits ;)

(NOTE FROM JOZ: I am TAIWANESE AMERICAN!)
Racism in a camera? PLEASE! Racism to who? Asians? Who the hell do you think builds these things anyway? Asians that’s who. Don’t go off the deep end and blame “Whitey” on this one. We didn’t build it. At last talley we don’t build too much of anything any more.
Does the camera’s voice have an accent? I didn’t think so.
hey, your post made it to yahoo! news… :) http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/20100122/wl_time/08599195464300
hey, your post made it to yahoo! news… :) news.yahoo.com/s/time/20100122/wl_time/08599195464300
Uh, Jim, shut the fuck up. Who said anything about “whitey”? Looks like Jim is off on the DEEP end and you’ll drown out there all by yourself. LOL DUMB ASS!
fist of all ignore what that ignorant trash named jim said.and it a good thing it doesn’t do that to most of us african americans that would be a problem noone wants maybe they should improve on the face detection before they put it out on the market..
by the way u have a cute face and smile..
@Jim
Sensitive much? This was meant to be funny, and it is. Unbunch your panties STAT!
this is greattt!!!! hahahah
I just read about this on Yahoo….omg! This is too funny!
being Filipino all i can say is, racism is when the camera says, “Did someone brink?” lol
Hahahaha
I saw this on yahoo news, but this is just horrible!
tsk, bad sensors
Well, knowing the Japanes, at least it didn’t say; “Did someone brink?”…
It’s obvious that this technology is still very limited in its range of capability that it only works on people with round eyes or bugged-out eyes.
You guys do know that Nokia is from Finland right, not Japan. But I am Asian myself.
Perhaps the software should have been written to cover the situation from a broader perspective.
It should say: “Did someone blink or did an Asian sneak into your shot?”
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA DID SOMEONE BLINK?? CLASSIC!!!!! Like when you take a picture of certain other people, the “night setting” goes on
@JMV .. its not a nokia its a nikon
You are cute, are you married?
My camera is also racist! It turns me into a vampire with horrible red eyes and a extremely pale skin!
It looks like the japanese are copying True Western Lifestyle perfectly: never miss an opportunity to yell “Racist!” at your own people for the slightest of reasons.
You’re now also quoted in swedens second largest morning newspaper: http://www.svd.se/naringsliv/nyheter/smarta-kameror-klarar-inte-asiatiska-ogon_4137251.svd
Ha Ha Ha! This is what you all spend your time worrying about. Don’t you have better things to do than get all excited about face recognition?
I hear ya and understand! What irks me is that I am a light skinned black woman, and when I take pictures I come out so bright that I look white! So, what can we do about these cameras?
Love it, VERY good job. (To inform “the world”, about this.)
Great fun. lol

I “looked” at your “wish-list”, so YOU, you “made” my brain START “working”!
Fiskars “blade’s”, AND book’s about cooking Japanese food…….
Are you going to “hack” chunks out of Whales, for a Sushi reastaurant????
Beat that camera up! >:O
@Rob
Wow I cannot believe I missed that…. Well thanks for poniting that out…
they shoulda called it ‘chink-detection.’
Now all u flamers don’t get excited, I’m half chinese myself, it’s just I got a sense of humor too
