Model Minority: Good or Bad?

Model minority refers to a minority ethnic, racial, or religious group whose members achieve a higher degree of success than the population average. This success is typically measured in income, education, and related factors such as low crime rate and high family stability. Critics of this terminology say that it amounts to racial stereotyping, and that its use may be a political tool and its implications incite jealousy and fighting among ethnic minorities, an example of leveraging majority power dynamics to provoke ill sentiments between minority groups.

As a student of Asian American Studies, I realize the topic of Model Minority could warrant its own 12 week course, but let’s just take a whack at it shall we?

  • Is the Model Minority a myth? What truth(s) lie in this?
  • What are the positives of the “Model Minority” stereotype? Negatives?
  • Are good stereotypes good? Are good stereotypes bad?
  • Why should (or shouldn’t) Asian Americans fight the Model Minority stereotype?

    Mini Movie Review: Bourne Ultimatum

    As I mentioned the other day, my company sponsored a movie matinee at the Arclight, which was awesome. Not only did we get to cut out of work a couple hours early, they bought out the whole theater so we had a private screening where we could whoop and holler as much as we wanted without bothering regular moviegoers. In the 2+ years I have been at my company, this is the first time I’ve been able to take advantage of a daytime (during work hours) company event. I haven’t attended either of the company Holiday parties in the past two years because they were held at lunchtime on a Friday. They’ve had a number of screenings that I had to pass on because I was working. So it was really nice that I got to go (finally) to my first company screening.

    I enjoyed The Bourne Ultimatum, but had some beefs about some of the director’s choices, but overall it was an enjoyable, suspenseful, action-filled movie. It’s not as good as my friends keep telling me they thought it was, so I didn’t like it THAT much.

    Anyway, if anyone wants to discuss privately, find me on IM or something.
