…answers, that is.
So while I’m not done with this nightmare desk cleaning job (hey, it took a lot longer than 2 days for it to get like this!), I had a thought that I kept coming back to… what would it take for me to digitize all these paper bills I have filed away?
I’m a little old school about my bills. Even though I pay them online, I still like to get my bills mailed to me. I can make my notes on them and then I file them (well, once in a while I file them). I worry that if I start getting my bills online I’ll forget to pay them. And the last thing I want to do is to have to print bills out just to remind myself to pay them.
Anyway, I have all these paper bills that I’d like to keep a copy of. I was thinking I could scan the bills to pdf and finally feel OK about shredding/recycling everything. Except that my current all-in-one scanner/printer/copier/fax doesn’t scan to PDF. It scans to .jpg or .tif or some other unweildy file format.
So in the middle of all my cleaning yesterday, I took a few minutes to IM Chris Pirillo to pick his brain for a solution. What I didn’t realize is that he was in the middle of doing his show when I IMed him. He asked me if I wanted to call in, but if I did that Yoshi would catch me “goofing off” (not cleaning) and I didn’t want to get in trouble for that. But he was nice enough to make a post about my problem anyway… and get coupon codes for the products he found!
Anyway, thanks to Chris, I have a couple of possibilities to investigate. Thanks, Chris!

Hey, thanks for the info on scanning to PDF. I’ve been contemplating buying a scanner for the same reasons. Happy Memorial Day!!
Now you just have to ask yourself, what are you going to store the PDFs on? DVD? Just remember that CDs and DVDs have a shelf life.
I’m a bit old school too…pay online, but receive the paper bills in the mail.
scanning documents to pdf form just seems like more work than just putting the files in storage. good luck, joz!
Wow. i’m in awe of your organization.
