I finally heard from my friend E (who lives in OC, but whose parents live and own two shops in New Orleans). E and I are childhood friends and our moms have been good friends for many years. E said her parents are fine (there went inland to stay with friends), but they don’t know how their house/shops are. But at least her parents are fine.

I know what you mean- you don’t know if it’s good news as in the shops and their home may be damaged, but nobody’s hurt. i think it’s good news- the news coverage of Katrina is freaking me out!
It was good that some people were able to get out of the way.
I saw that the looting is bad right now. Looters should be shot on sight.
Shooting looters on sight only makes the medical situation worse in the area.
