Since when did Domino’s begin charging a “delivery fee?” And does that mean that you don’t have to tip the driver?
Tonight Yoshi was jonesing for some pizza, so I looked in our coupon pamphlet and found a deal for 1 small one-topping pizza + 2 Amazin’ Greens salads (usually $4.99/salad) for $16.99. I figured that with tax and tip, I would be somewhere around $20 for the order. I figured that I’d have a salad tonight and another salad for lunch tomorrow & save me a trip out of the office tomorrow.
Well after I placed my order (this was after being asked to hold about 20 times while making the order), the pizza girl told me my total was $20.65. I asked why my total was $20.65 when my coupon was for $16.99 (with 8.25% tax, we’re talking about an order of $18.39) and she said “I don’t know.” Great customer service there.
I asked again, “How come my total order is more than $20 when what I ordered was $16.99?” and the response was “That’s what the computer says.”
I basically didn’t care what the computer said because even though I love & depend on my computer, I still think we live in a world where people can overrule what a computer says, especially when the computer is wrong.
I heard the pizza girl ask the manager why the total was so much higher than what we expected and she came back to reply something about a “delivery fee” and also something about an extra charge for each of the salad dressings that came with the salad (Excuse me!?! You are charging me for SALAD DRESSING!? I think that the dressing should come with the salad).
When the delivery guy came, I only left him a tip of $1.35 or so, but then I felt like if I was being charged a “delivery charge” maybe I shouldn’t leave a tip at all. But then, it would suck for the delivery guy if he didn’t get a cut of the “delivery charge.”
Maybe if I hadn’t been charged extra for salad dressing, I would’ve felt more generous with a tip. I wish they could’ve broken down the charges, because I wonder if they charged me for the plastic forks, croutons, and the napkins, too.
I’ll be hard-pressed to order from those pizza nazis again, that’s for sure.
P.S. - The only thing “amazin’” about those salads is how much “green” Dominos makes off of them.
Your conversation with the “pizza girl” reminds me of the old joke where the power went out at a McDonald’s and the youth behind the register says to the customer “I guess I’ll have to do this the old-fashioned way” and pulls out a pocket calculator.
“I don’t know” is not an acceptable answer unless she can’t RTFS. (Read The F**king Screen)
In Germany, they charge for ketchup and mustard packets at McDonalds.
wait a minute.. 1 small ONE topping pizza and 2 small salads are 17 bucks???!!! Yikes!! ;p
Try the 555 deal next time. Its 3 pizzas, 1 topping each for 5 dollars each! Thats a better deal and with tax and tip it will probably be 20 bucks all together. Better yet. Just ask for pick up if you live closeby. Save on the delivery that way. If you dont have any coupons or special deals, its not really worth it to go Dominos. Happy Valentines!
Update: You know, you should complain at the website. They have a customer relations page and maybe you can get something back for reporting such poor service. If they screwed you over, chances are that they are doing the same to other customers and thats downright outrageous!
…..charging a “delivery fee?” And does that mean that you don’t have to tip the driver?
I always wondered that myself and sadly I haven’t found an answer yet. I would be inclined to say the the delivery fee should go to the driver but we all know that those corporate money hungry people find ways to keep it for themselves.
As Vince noted above, Domino’s really has poor prices if you don’t have a coupon/deal. I like their 555 deal as well, especially when we’re having a lot of people over. But I would definately call and email their corporate offices to complain. That’s just absurd, not to mention very poor customer service.
We usually get the 555 deal, but because I wasn’t eating pizza and Yoshi just wanted a small pizza, it didn’t make sense to get 3 pizzas.
Boboli shell with pizza toppings < $10
premade salad $5
Total = $15
Not having to eat Domino’s food… Priceless
Sorry, I never do Domino’s food, it’s just too nasty.
Boycott them. Tell Dominos HQ why.
my parents used to own a pizza joint. please tip the delivery guy. he probably gets paid crap.
I was a Domino’s delivery guy when they first instituted the delivery charge. This was about a year ago, and as far as we knew, Domino’s was the last hold-out with no delivery charges. Word was, they finally caved and decided $1 was fair. We were all freaked out by the idea that if people find out they’re paying for delivery, they’d stop tipping.
We eventually realized two things: 1. people have been tipping Pizza Hut guys etc. forever without a problem, despite paying for delivery, and 2. just like our bosses said, people didn’t stop tipping. Well, some people did, but we delivery guys were used to people stiffing the driver. I thought it was good of the company to require that we disclose the charge, despite it potentially hurting the drivers — I don’t believe in “fuck the customer.” I’m a customer, too.
Understand, delivery guys are paid $6/hour because its expected that tips make up for the other half of our pay. That’s right, the big chains expect you, the customer, to pay the other half of delivery guy’s paychecks.
So to summarize, don’t stop tipping the Domino’s guy. He doesn’t need your money any less with this new delivery charge.
One more thing! We (Dominos) never charged for napkins etc, but did charge for dressing, and at my store, we HAD to disclose the delivery charge up-front, all the time.
People were always understandably shocked at how much they were paying for really nothing, but those little doodads add up, and $6 for a thing of 10 Kickers — well, we understand.
