I need to know how to network a PC and a Mac together so they can share a DSL connection. Buying a router is not an option (unless someone wants to send one to me as a tax deduction). Would be best if I could share files. I have a Mac that likes to crash & a new PC that runs XP. I want to move everything on the Mac to the PC, but still have the Mac as another workstation for someone else to do some database work. Help.
I also need to set up a photoblog that can accept comments. (This is not pictures of/by me… this is a favor to someone else.) I will not do a photoblog for myself until I get a digital camera that doesn’t suck ass.
And I need to know good, cheap hosting services to handle said photoblog. I also need to know a good, cheap service where I can register a new domain name. Cheap. Good. Cheap.
THANKS!!!
UPDATE: As you can tell, my awesome friend Mike is hosting my blog for free, because he’s awesome. I’m trying to figure out a way if I can afford to not be a mooch. If there are good hosting prices, I may migrate to my own URL… just a thought!
For a free, ready to download photoblog template, you might want to take a look at http://blogstyles.com/photo/photoblog.php
http://www.godaddy.com for about the cheapest domain names, and talk to Tasha, frome http://www.somegirl.net
Tell her I sent ya and ask if she can do you a good price - the service is excellent and the prices are really good (I know because she hosts my site).
I’m away for a few weeks (ok, six), so Tasha, Sonia and Mel are baby-sitting my blog.
Already it’s turned to chaos.
See you in a month or so!!
*hug*
I’m happy with http://www.ipowerweb.com. Pretty cheap, loads of bandwidth & space plus email, mySql, and PHP support. Free domain registration if you sign up for a year. Totally worth it for me.
If you set up the XP box as a server the Mac should just be able to talk to it like it would any other server (provided it has it’s own IP).
There’s also a program called “Dave” that is supposed to network Macs and PCs. I’ve had mixed results with it.
I just use a router (I have a Win98 box and an os9 Mac). So easy. Cost $100. You can find cheaper too if you hunt around.
Mac to PC is easy it’s the PC to Mac part that’s hard. Get in the habit of saving all your stuff on your Mac in PC format (i.e. formatting disks and stuff). The Mac won’t care but the PC will freak if it smells fruit.
sean forgot to mention you’ll probably need a crossover cable if you’re not going through a router. a crossover cable will link two machines directly together (looks exactly like a network cable, but the wires are connected differently) … cheaper than a router too.
Affordable Host is excellent. Very high dependability. Not too expensive, either. I’m in the process of moving my site over there.
I think that if you use the cpanel package you can also set up a photo gallery with comments. I’ll check if you want to know.
I used registerfly to get domains for a very good price. If you’re interested, I’ll give details via e-mail. Not affiliated, yadda yadda.

I have a spare router if you still need one. Let me know, k?
For a cheap hosting, try hostradius.com. I’m using them, and I get 25MB of storage and 1GB of bandwidth for $1 per month (customized plan). I get about 40+ visitors a day, and the bandwidth is more than enough.
